Climate Change Challenge: Bigger Floods

Grant Award: $250,000; Year Awarded: 2017

The Nature Conservancy will help wildlife and people in the Iowa portion of the Mississippi River Basin adapt to increasing precipitation caused by climate change. The increased precipitation is leading to severe flooding, poor water quality, and soil loss. Through the restoration of wetlands in urban, suburban, and agricultural areas, water storage will increase, flood risk will decrease and water quality will improve. In addition to local adaptation benefits, these wetlands will also provide habitat for waterfowl and other wetland species as climate change dries out wetlands further west.
