Climate Change Challenge: Changing Lake Levels

Grant Award: $250,000; Year Awarded: 2017

Great Lakes coastal wetlands are experiencing intensified storm and flooding events, rapid fluctuations in lake levels, and long-term water level declines. Through the use of water control structures, Audubon will enable land managers to adapt to rapid lake level fluctuations and the anticipated long-term decline of lake levels brought on by climate change. This project builds on an established landowner collaborative in Illinois, Indiana and Michigan that is working to systematically restore wetlands in the region. These adaptation measures will also improve water quality and reduce flooding risk for two urban communities.
